A summer program where academically talented high school students join active science, math, or engineering research teams under faculty mentors and present at a closing poster symposium, receiving a stipend award.
Who should apply
A great fit for academically talented high school juniors (U.S. citizens or permanent residents) who want hands-on, mentored research in science, math, or engineering at a research university.
Eligibility
- Currently in junior year (11th grade); sophomores and graduating seniors aren't eligible
- At least 16 by the start of the program
- U.S. citizens and/or permanent residents
- Requires a nomination from a high school official (max 2 nominees per school)
What you get
- Hands-on research (~5.5 weeks, June 29 – August 7, 2026) with a faculty mentor on an active research team
- Lab techniques and the experience of life at a research university
- A closing poster symposium where students present and receive a stipend award
What the application involves
- School nomination by January 30, 2026
- Application by February 5, 2026
- Unofficial transcript (PDF)
- Two teacher recommendation letters (math/science preferred) by February 13, 2026
- Selection of top three preferred research mentors
Application tips
- Secure your school nomination early — each school can nominate only two students and the nomination deadline precedes the application deadline.
- Research faculty mentors in advance so your top-three choices reflect genuine interest.
- Choose math/science teachers as recommenders.
Good to know
Highly selective (reported acceptance rate under 5%). No tuition/fees, but participants cover transportation/dining (commuters) and/or residential costs if dorming.
